MELAKA: A group of thieves broke into a goldsmith shop at Bandar Jasin 2 here on Friday night and carted off RM200,000 in cash and jewellery.

The robbers were able to carry out the heist in spite of the shop being outfitted with an alarm system, sophisticated locks and up to 10 CCTV cameras.

It is believed that the burglars entered the premises by peeling off parts of the roof and breaking through the ceiling.

They then headed to the shop’s strongroom, cut its padlock and broke open two safes containing jewellery and cash.

The 63-year-old shop owner discovered the break-in when he was about to open for business on Saturday and lodged a police report at 10.55am, said Jasin district police chief Deputy Superintendent Arshad Abu.

"The suspects climbed over the back grille gate before going onto the roof. They removed the zinc roofing and broke the ceiling to enter the premises.

"Investigations also revealed that the burglars had cut off the alarm wires," Arshad said in a statement.

He added that 10 CCTV cameras were installed inside and outside the premises – but they are now inoperable, as the burglars had managed to take the decoder. — BERNAMA
