KUALA LUMPUR: BA of Malaysia (BAM) patron, Datin Paduka Seri Rosmah Mansor is confident that the setting up of the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) which will be launched this year will be able to produce world class players.
According to her, ABM will be able to churn out champion world beaters by taking a more systematic and scientific approach.
“Presently we need to take into account from aspects of nutrition, energy levels, and training which are carried out systematically and scientifically. National badminton players will be here (ABM) to train and learn in their quest to become champions,” she said when met at the finals of the 2017 AirAsia-BAM National Junior League (ABNJL) at Juara Stadium here yesterday.
She explained, what’s most important at ABM is the training workforce and support services as well as the determination and willingness in the heart of each and every player to become a champion.
"World class champions, this is what I want to see. I am hoping that our players can become the best in the world just like before. The level of badminton has improved in other countries, so one aspect which we need to study and research on, is how can these other countries improve.
"The level of their game has improved so much so they have become champions, so why can’t we do the same, or better? What I have discussed before this is looking into the players confidence, playing with the desire to win and fight to the very end, do not give up when left or fallen behind,” she said after launching BAM’s official song, ‘We are the champions’.
Rosmah stressed that a more in-depth study will be carried out with the setting up of ABM, including on how to produce world class champions along with the necessary elements that need to be incorporated to avoid any deficiency or shortcoming.
Meanwhile, Sports Minister, Khairy Jamaluddin admitted that ABM is the latest development where Malaysian badminton is concerned, where it will become a hub for nurturing and developing the best players, adding that it was the brainchild of BAM’s patron.
"We will move players from the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) to ABM to enable them to live, learn, train, study and hone their badminton skills and prowess. This means we hope to produce world champions from here (ABM). There’s no point of just having infrastructure alone, we need the best equipment and facilities to produce champions.
"Whatever that’s best in terms of sports science will be provided upon such as psychology experts, rehabilitation facilities, and biomechanics analysis among others. Let hardcore training be merged with sports science because we want all the young players to have the will and desire to succeed,” said Khairy.
